A formal ceremony held at the Armed Forces of Malta’s Air Wing at Luqa Airport officially marked the completion of the modernisation of the maritime reconnaissance fleet, as well as the new training and analysis capabilities. The Armed Forces of Malta entrusted Aerodata with the modernisation of the mission equipment as well as the development of the simulator in August 2024. Guests of honour included Glenn Bedingfield, Minister for Home Affairs and Security, and Keith Azzopardi Tanti, Minister for EU-Funds.
The event marked the successful completion of the Midlife Upgrade Programme for AFM’s third King Air aircraft, which we originally delivered in 2017. Thanks to this modernisation, the fleet now boasts a unified technological standard and enhanced capabilities for maritime surveillance and security operations in the Mediterranean region. The project was co-funded by the EU.
The Ground Simulator Training Device was also officially unveiled during the event. This simulator realistically replicates the systems and sensors of the operational aircraft, enabling crews to undertake practical training in a safe environment. It combines technical aircraft data with operational experience gained from many years of service with the King Air fleet. This means that both routine procedures and complex operational scenarios can be practised realistically without tying up operational aircraft for training purposes.
