PRECISION IN SPECIAL MISSION

Missions

Maritime/Land Surveillance, Fishery and Border Patrol

The adequate sensor suite consists of:

  • surveillance radar, whereas the type of the radar is selected according to the required mission tasks, e.g. GMTI mode for land surveillance
  • EO/IR sensor
  • Wide-Band Direction Finder
  • AIS transponder, if maritime missions are of concern
  • ESM / COMINT / ELINT

At any time of the mission, the moving map of the software provides full situational awareness regarding the area of concern. The mission data base as well as the automatic reporting system share all relevant information with the ground coordination centre or other mission aircraft. Furthermore, AeroMission is able to receive and process task orders.

The flight planning functionality of AeroMission allows for receiving flight plans from the ground coordination center. Another option is the creation of flight plans by the operator. AeroMission supports flight guidance by interfacing the Flight Management System (FMS).

The communication suite is tailored to the customers need and typically includes VHF/UHF tactical radios with encryption for voice and data link. In addition a wide-band SatCom is foreseen. For specific missions also a micro wave video down link can be added. AeroMission provides a communication relay.

Search and Rescue (SAR) Missions

The suitable sensor set-up includes:

  • surveillance radar
  • EO/IR sensor
  • SAR Direction Finder
  • AIS Transponder

At any time of the mission, the moving map provided by the mission software provides full situational awareness in order to find the ship in distress as soon as possible. The automatic reporting system shares all relevant information with the rescue centre on ground and is able to receive task orders.

In addition to the basic functionalities, the planning and execution of drop maneuvers (e.g. life rafts, droppable supplies) is supported by AeroMission.

The communication with the vessel in distress is realized by a VHF marine radio and a communication relay. For larger SAR operations, AeroMission can act as a flying command post in terms of Top Cover and On Scene Coordination functions.

Bubble windows for the observers and a drop hatch with a storage area for life rafts and other droppable supplies complete the cabin layout.

For SAR missions over land, a GSM locator can be added as additional sensor.

Environmental and Pollution Monitoring

The sensor suite, stand-alone or integrated into the OctoPod, consists of:

For data processing, online during the mission as well as post-processing on ground, a specific software is used to detect and characterize the type of pollution and to differentiate between oil spills and e.g. algae.

In case an illegal oil spill is detected, e.g. released by a ship washing its tanks, AeroMission is able to provide all information (data, videos, images) relevant for preservation of evidence (time, latitude, longitude, etc.).

Law Enforcement and Police Applications

The adequate equipment consists of:

  • EO/IR sensor
  • search light
  • tactical direction finder
  • SatCom for voice and data communication
  • microwave video downlink

Besides the moving map, the mission software also provides a street address database in order to slave the EO/IR sensor or to get the street address corresponding to the EO/IR footprint.
An Iridium SatCom for voice and data realizes the communication. For specific missions also a microwave video down link can be added.

Helicopters mainly perform these missions and thus, weight optimization plays an important role. The AeroMission operator workstation and the equipment container for helicopters has been designed to meet this requirement. Depending on the size of the helicopter single or dual displays are integrated into the workstation.

Top Cover and On-Scene Coordination

For larger operations with several assets involved (e.g. other aircraft, helicopters, surface vessels), AeroMission can act as a flying command post in terms of Top Cover and On-Scene Coordination functions.

  • facilitate communications between all mission related units
  • alert and direct other assets assisting on the mission
  • provide support for other assets assisting on the mission (typically a helicopter or a vessel)
  • receive and decode briefings from a coordination center
  • re-distribute briefings to other assets
  • manage the operation of other assets
  • receive reports from other assets
  • combine this information into a tactical picture and forward information to the coordination center
  • support of other mission related units during rescue maneuvers

Intercept and Escort

The capabilities for assistance to other aircraft or surface vessels in distress include:

  • communication
  • navigation
  • if required, identification of the distress location
  • provision of immediate help
  • organisation of ongoing assistance
